Toby Richards

Toby Richards has just moved to Australia after nine years at UCL, to take up post at University of Western Australia as a clinical academic Professor of Surgery at practising Vascular Surgeon at Fiona Stanley Hospital. He has a strong interest in integrating translational and clinical trials into clinical practice as part of best patient care. He has recently completed a UK NIHR HTA multicentre RCT to explore the effect of intravenous iron to prevent transfusion (PREVENTT) in patients undergoing major surgery. 500 patients in 30 centres were randomised to preoperative intravenous iron or placebo in a double blind manner before major surgery. The aim is to assess impact of this intervention on transfusion and outcomes following operation. He is also collaborating with several ongoing trials of iron therapy in Australia; ITACS, IRONMAN and IRON NOF.
