Jessica Opie

Jessica qualified MBChB (Honours) from the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 1994. After her internship in Namibia, she worked in the United Kingdom (UK) gaining experience in general medicine, haematology and medical oncology including stem cell transplantation. She qualified as a Member of the Royal College of Physicians (UK) in 1999. She then moved to Sydney, Australia, where she trained further in Laboratory Haematology, qualifying as a specialist with the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in 2005. Jessica returned to South Africa in 2005, motivated to contribute to haematology teaching, training and clinical care in South Africa. She has focused on developing and maintaining a high quality academic/tertiary level haematology diagnostic service in the university hospital environment and leads postgraduate registrar teaching, training and research for doctors specialising in Haematology. Jessica was appointed Head of the Division of Haematology at UCT in May 2018. Her special interest is the haematological complications of HIV, particularly HIV-related lymphomas.
